How to Maintain Healthy Eyes In a Digital World

In today's digital world, with smartphones, tablets, computers, televisions, and electronic signs everywhere, people spend more and more time staring at screens than ever before. This can lead to many health consequences, including eye strain, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye and vision problems. By taking the following precautions, however, you can support your eyes' continued health, even as you take part in this digital revolution.  

 

Good Viewing Habits

 

To protect your eyes while viewing any computer screen, smartphone, or digital television, follow these tips:

  • Avoid dry eyes by blinking more frequently or using eye drops or artificial tears.
  • Be sure your eyewear prescription (i.e., glasses, contacts) are current and appropriate for looking at a digital monitor.
  • Pick a chair that comfortably supports you and orient it to keep your feet flat against the floor.
  • Prevent glare from lights and windows as much as possible, even using an anti-glare screen, if required.
  • Orient the monitor to keep your eyes level with the top of the screen so that you're looking slightly downward at it.
  • Every 20 minutes look away from the screen for 20 seconds to rest your eyes. Every two hours, minimum, step away from the screen for a 15-minute break.
